Eadweard Muybridge

Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904) is best known for his pioneering photographic studies of motion, which began at the Stanfords’ Palo Alto Stock Farm, using Leland Stanford Sr.'s horse 'Occidental' as his initial subject. Born in England as Edward James Muggeridge, Muybridge emigrated to New York in the early 1850s and went into business importing English books. In the 1860s, after moving to California, he learned wet plate photography and joined his friend Silas Selleck in his photo business. Muybridge quickly became recognized as one of the preeminent photographers of the American west.

In 1872, Leland Stanford Sr. commissioned Muybridge to use photography to answer a question: is there a moment when all four of a trotting horse’s hooves are off the ground? With Stanford’s financial backing and encouragement, the famously clever photographer perfected instantaneous photography and proved that the answer is yes. For a decade, particularly in 1872–73 and 1878–79, this most consequential partnership in American photography enabled Muybridge to advance his techniques and make groundbreaking photographs that merged mechanical technology, the science of physiology, and visual art.

The Cantor Arts Center’s collection includes a copy of Muybridge’s rare The Attitudes of Animals in Motion album, assembled from his 1878–79 photographs, as well as photographs from his Animal Locomotion project, a continuation of his motion studies completed under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania. The Cantor’s collection also includes Muybridge’s Phases of the Eclipse series and a robust selection of examples of the artist’s earlier acclaimed landscape photographs, San Francisco city views, documentation of Modoc Native Americans, photographs taken in Central America, and other commissioned work. Alongside photographic prints, glass negatives, and lantern slides, an array of photographic equipment, including a recreation of his 1879 zoöpraxiscope, gives insight into Muybridge’s oeuvre and the groundwork it laid for the advent of moving images.
